Six properties to receive Heritage Designation
Six properties to receive heritage designation
ALEXANDRIA, November 15, 2024 –
A combination of six residential, commercial, and ecclesiastical properties were approved by Council to move forward with the heritage designation process. Each property has been identified as being of cultural heritage value and interest within the Township of North Glengarry in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.
The More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022 (Bill 23) introduced new requirements for municipalities with non-designated (“listed”) properties on their heritage registers. Municipalities are required to review all “legacy listed properties” to determine whether each listed property warrants designation under the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA)* by January 1, 2027 (formerly January 1, 2025).
Upon review of listed properties by North Glengarry’s Arts Cultural and Heritage Committee, it was determined that five could move forward in the designation process including; The Congregational Church at 18191 Kenyon Concession 19 I.L., Maxville; The Saint Elmo Presbyterian Church at 1996 County Rd 20, Indian Lands, Maxville; 6 Church St, Maxville; 101 Centre St, Alexandria; and 53 Dominion St, Alexandria. A sixth property,209-215 Main Street N, Alexandria, was added to the process at the request of the property owner who was part of the initial five.
In accordance with Section 29(3) of the Ontario Heritage Act, Notice of Intent letters were issued to the property owners on September 11, 2024. An ad containing the Notice of Intent to Designate all six properties was published in The Review newspaper on September 11, 2024. No objections were received, and Council voted in favour of these properties being designated on October 15, 2024.
“The Heritage Designation helps to conserve heritage properties that are so important to our community.” Stated Committee Chair, Jeff Manley. “We are committed to preserving and honouring our local history and are grateful for the public’s support of these initiatives.
