Glengarry Golf Course

Glengarry Golf and Country Club

Nestled just outside of Alexandria is Glengarry's "Hidden Gem," a semi-private course that features Eastern Ontario's longest Par 4, The Monster, and two groupings of three holes -- one on the front nine and the other on the back -- worthy of the distinctive golf epithet: Amen Corner.

Most golfers know Amen Corner as describing a section of the Augusta National Golf Course where they hold the Masters each year. The phrase was coined by noted golf writer Herbert Warren Wind in an article in Sports Illustrated describing the 1958 Masters Tournament. Wind said he wanted a "catchy phrase" to describe where some of the most exciting golf took place each year at the Masters. In particular, he was referring to the second shot at the 11th hole that required carrying Rae's Creek; all of the 12th hole -- the par 3 with its tiny sliver of green considered to be one of the most difficult and nerve-wracking shots; and the initial shot on the 13th hole.
